Go Balance Celebrates the Trocano Araretama REDD Project Initiatives
Advancing REDD+ Impact and Community Engagement in Borba
We are proud to celebrate the continued success of the Trocano Araretama REDD Project — a high-integrity nature-based project led by Go Balance in partnership with the Municipality of Borba, Amazonas. As a REDD+ project, the Trocano Project is rooted in local collaboration, transparency, and measurable impact. Go Balance is dedicated to advancing the project’s long-term success and impact, and its community-led initiatives throughout the Municipality of Borba.
This update highlights the ongoing delivery of social and environmental benefits – from stingless bee breeding to sustainable land-use activities – and recent project initiatives carried out in Borba, such as the education day in Castanhal Community.
Community-Driven Conservation in Action
At the core of the Trocano Araretama REDD Project is a clear guiding principle: that the protection of forests must directly benefit the people who live within them. Led by Go Balance in partnership with the Municipality of Borba, Amazonas, the project is designed to deliver environmental and social value hand in hand — with communities as active and engaged participants.
Across the region, local initiatives supported through the project continue to deliver real-world outcomes. These include:
- Stingless bee (meliponiculture) training that introduces sustainable, forest-friendly livelihoods
- Composting workshops that improve food resilience and reduce waste
- Women’s health and wellbeing programmes that promote inclusion, support, and dignity
- Environmental education sessions in schools, engaging the next generation of stewards
- Fire brigade training and equipment to strengthen community readiness against forest fire risk
Local partners help shape each initiative, and trusted organisations lead or support implementation while working closely with the communities themselves.
Strengthening Forest Protection Through Local Knowledge
Education, awareness, and skill-sharing are essential tools for building lasting conservation. Our Trocano Araretama Project recognises that climate resilience is rooted not only in monitoring and data, but in people.
On 8th May 2025, a visit to the Sempre Viva Santana Community highlighted this impact. The Go Balance education team was warmly welcomed by Mr. Daniel Farias da Cruz, manager of the José Pereira Pinheiro School, where 49 students gathered for an environmental education session.
The team prepared the school auditorium for the event with the support of the dedicated school staff. The children, from both Elementary I and II levels, were joined by engaged teachers and community members. The presentation covered key topics in environmental awareness, tailored to their local surroundings, and left a lasting impression on both students and staff.
Before beginning, the team extended thanks to the school and to the Municipal Department of Education of Borba (SEMED) for their ongoing support. They acknowledged the essential role of the Trocano Araretama Project in making such activities possible.
“The Trocano Araretama Project has brought practical courses, valuable lectures, and environmental awareness campaigns to our community,” said one of the community members. “We see the results — in participation, in knowledge shared, and in the voices of community leaders.”
Local Voices Reflect on the Project’s Practical Value
After the session, Mr. Daniel and several teachers expressed their appreciation for the project’s work and the difference it has made locally.
Community residents, including Mr. Messias and Mr. Charlison Alves, shared how meliponiculture and fertilisation training had provided them with tangible tools to better manage their natural resources and build more sustainable livelihoods.
These are not isolated stories — they are part of a broader pattern of meaningful, measurable engagement across the project area.
A REDD+ Project Built on Integrity and Measurable Impact
The Trocano Araretama Project is independently verified under internationally recognised standards and implements a risk-based, science-based methodology. Every Natural Capital Credit verified and issued reflects a conservative and transparent approach to carbon accounting, aligned with robust oversight.
But what sets this REDD+ project apart is its commitment to benefits beyond carbon. The formal agreement between Go Balance and the Municipality of Borba ensures local participation in governance and implementation. We document, monitor and refine project activities in collaboration with local communities.
Transparency is not just a reporting principle for the project. It’s embedded in every level of project implementation and operation, from school visits to credit issuance.
Looking Ahead: A Future Focused on Forests and Communities
As the Trocano Araretama REDD Project continues to grow, so too does its impact — in classrooms, in community gardens, in training sessions, and in the minds of future generations of conservation leaders across Borba.
Go Balance is proud to lead this work in partnership with the Municipality and the communities it serves. Through education, environmental stewardship, and practical support, the project is helping to secure a future that values both climate stability and local empowerment.
